Salem Log Carriages are built for demanding mill applications. Salem Carriages are offered in 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6 knee standard configurations, with a wide variety of openings for small or large logs.
Every Salem carriage can be configured for conventional headrig bandmills or 17° slanted applications.
Numerous optional devices are available such as Tong Dogs for holding large or rough shaped logs, Brownsville Turners for rotating logs 90 degrees for grade sawing on the Carriage, and Kickers for quick removal of the last cant from the carriage.
CUSTOM CONFIGURATIONS
Slanted or Standard
- Standard or 17° Tilt models are available with hydraulic positioning, roundways for knees and oscillating dogs, and knee openings ranging from 30” to 60”.

Frames
- Available with 8” or 10” boxed wide flange beam or 6” or 8” structural tube steel for carriage weight considerations.
Knees
- Available with 2,3,4, 5, or 6 knees for varied log length applications
- Knee openings available in increments of 30”, 36”, 42”, 48”, 54”, or 60”. Standard or 17° tilted configurations are available. All knees are heat stress relieved prior to machining.
- Center Dog knees with oscillating cinch back operation are standard.
- Knees available with round way or chrome wear strips with gib work attachment

- Steel or high molecular weight plastic wheels on steel hubs are available.

STANDARD TOUGHNESS
KNEES
- Simplifies infinite tapering with individual hydraulic cylinders on each knee.
- Knee motion is smoother through continual knee speed and acceleration control.
- Accuracy is improved and maintenance is less through the elimination of mechanical components and mechanism wear.
DOGS
- Rugged and powerful for positive log holding.
- Dogs are generally located in the center of the knee, especially for infinite tapering.
- Dogs on outside of knee are available upon request.
FRAME
- Heavy-duty wide flange beam.
- Complete weldment.
- Gussetted and braced for strength.
- Front main beam is fish-plated box construction.
TRUCKS
- Wheels are specified by customer; special UHMW plastic or machined from wear resistant alloy steel.
- Axles are of non-rotating design and are made from high strength alloy steel.
- Wheels are carried by a double set of cup and cone roller bearings and are adjustable to set proper clearance.
HEAD BLOCKS
- Rugged steel fabrication with heavy-duty rectangular tubing main beams.
- Extra large bed plates are industrial hard chrome plated and are reversible.
- A full wrap-around nose plate protects the headblock from the log turner.
